TOEFL iBT ⭐︎
TOEFL iBT, Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a test to evaluate English ability in an academic situation for those not native speakers of English. The test is used for almost all schools, colleges, and universities in English spoken countries.
TOEFL iBT is the third version of TOEFL. Compared to the past version of TOEFL, iBT is hard for most Japanese because Japanese tend to be not good at speaking English. Another reason for it is the “Integrated Test.” In integrated questions, you need to integrate listening skills, speaking skills, and writing skills.
There are not a lot of opportunities where you speak English living in Japan. In addition, almost all classes are taught in Japanese, not in English. These points mean that Japanese are in a disadvantaged situation for learning academic English, especially speaking.
Simply speaking, TOEFL iBT is challenging for ordinary Japanese students to take. Your score may be below 60 out of 120.
TOEFL ⭐︎
TOEFL iBT

Cost ⭐︎
Currency rate matters a lot when you study abroad. As you need to pay tuition in local currency, the currency rate of Japanese yen appreciate against dollar or local currency is quite influential. If the yen rate has shifted into the yen’s depreciation, studying abroad becomes more expensive.
In general, tuition has risen compared to that of the past. If you learn in an undergraduate program in the US, education tends to be more than 30,000 dollars per year. Many students in the US utilize student loans for paying their tuition and payback after graduation.
The need to pay back student loan influence students’ career after graduation. There are only several industries where you earn a decent salary, such as investment bank and management consulting.
Where to live also affects your wallet. Comparing metropolitan cities such as New York and rural towns, the former costs much higher than the latter in terms of living costs. NY is one of the most expensive cities to live and Singapore, London, and Hong Kong.
